2nd Avenue Bridge over I-94

Project Type: Construction Engineering
Location: Detroit, Michigan
Owner: MDOT
Client: Z Contractors, Inc.
Construction Cost: $26,000,000
Completion Date: 2022
JSE provided construction engineering services with design calculations and erection drawings required to erect the first skewed tied-arch bridge in America using a network of cables suspended from the arch to support the bridge deck.
The 245 ft. span has 18° skew with concrete post-tensioned tie-girders and steel floor beams. The bridge is being constructed using accelerated bridge construction method to reduce closure times on I-94 traffic.
The structural frame is erected in a nearby parking lot. The falsework is elevated 16 feet to allow insertion of self-propelled modular transports (SPMTs) to lift off the falsework and to roll the structural frame across I-94 and lower onto preinstalled bearings located on the abutments. Once in place, the bridge deck will be cast.
Total Length: 267’-6”
Span Length: 245’-0” on 18° skew
Width: 96’-6”
Features: traffic & bike lanes, sidewalks and landscaped median
