I-75 NB & SB over Ottawa River

Project Type: Value Engineering
Location: Toledo, Ohio
Owner: ODOT
Client: Kokosing Construction Company, Inc.
Construction Cost: $210,000,000
Completion Date: 2019
This multi-million-dollar bridge project was part of the ongoing I-75 redesign in Toledo Ohio (part of the phase B construction) that involves the reconstruction of the I-75 urban corridor while increasing the number of lanes. This bridge was selected for value engineering by the contractor to make use of efficiencies in their material procurement and construction methods.
The 2010 ft long bridge was fully redesigned (aside from roadway alignment and profile) per ODOT’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) procedure. The timeline and scope of changes during the VECP process provided unique opportunities and challenges for the design and construction. This presentation will cover the VECP process from the perspective of a designer, the method of value engineering pursued on this project, the role of the VECP process to create opportunities for cost and time savings and methods to improve and streamline the VECP process.
