Project Type: Construction Engineering (Demolition)
Location: Red Wing, MN
Owner: MnDOT
Client: Zenith Tech, Inc.
Completion Date: 2020
The cantilever Red Wing Bridge opened in 1960 and closed in 2019, carried two lanes of traffic and a narrow sidewalk
JSE performed a detailed demolition analysis of the suspended span, cantilever arm, anchor arm span, and simple span of the existing truss bridge based on the contractor’s proposed demolition scheme which included the lowering of the 288-foot suspended span section of the bridge to barges.
JSE built a 3-D model of the truss and investigated the stability of the truss (all structural members) for staged removal of the cantilever arm pieces and after pre-burning of selected elements required for demolition by explosives of the anchor arm and single spans. JSE also prepared schematic drawings outlining the demolition procedure.
