DEMOLITION PHASE
The existing bridge over the Ohio River was a 3 span steel truss 1158’ in length with a main span of 650’. The existing bridge required demolition and removal while minimizing disruption and allowing barge traffic to pass through the project site. JSE, working together with the Contractor, developed a staged demolition procedure utilizing explosives to remove the structure in segments. JSE developed a complex 3-D computer model of the structure in order to determine strategic locations for explosives. The model demonstrated the step by step removal was able to maintain the structure’s stability. Each demolition step and strategic location of explosives were analyzed for stability considering self-weight, construction loads, and wind loads.
