US 60 over Cumberland River

Project Type: Construction Engineering
Location: Livingston County, KY
Owner: KYTC
Client: Johnson Brothers/ American Bridge
Construction Cost: $61,000,000
Open to the Public: 2022
This is a 10 span, 1,913 ft long bridge constructed in a new alignment. Span 4 of this bridge was the main river crossing and utilized a 700 ft long single span truss system constructed with over 5.2 million pounds of structural steel. The 60 ft tall truss lines are separated by 48 ft and carry a 42’-5” wide concrete deck. The main truss was lifted into place after it was constructed across four barges, floated down river, lifted 90 feet into the air, and then set onto the final location on the piers. JSE’s services included ensuring stability of the truss during lifting for wind and dead loads, design and detail the temporary bracing of truss members required for lifting, and design of temporary falsework towers installed on the barges to support the truss. JSE generated a complex three-dimensional computer model to determine forces along the truss members to ensure stability. From the computer model, appropriate bracing could be sized.
